Design on a Dime Blog: How to UpCycle a Bedroom

In the spirit of out with the old in with the new, when I moved into my new place I wanted to swap out my entire home decor. However, since I don’t like to waste good furniture and am a bit frugal, I found myself in dilemma.

I really wanted a bright and airy Hollywood Glam/ Art Deco theme for my master bedroom, but didn’t want to buy all brand new stuff. My old furniture was a dark cherry wood color, and I wanted something lighter to match my theme.

With a little bit of PInterest inspiration, I decided the only way to get the look I wanted without buying a brand new bedroom set was to paint my old set.

I was so scared to try this at first, but am so glad I did. I love my up cycled bedroom set! It went so well I decided to apply metallic silver spray paint on my old lamps to match the theme. It was pretty simple to do, and with the help of my husband the total time to prime with  Kilz Low VOC paint primer, apply 2 coats of Ralph Lauren Metallic paint in the color Iron Gate, seal with Minwax 1 qt. Satin Polycrylic Protective Finish spray cans, and dry was about a week. We took our time doing it so it probably can be done much faster. After painting my bedroom chest with a brush I sprung for a  Home Right Finish Max Fine HVLP Paint Sprayer, and I’m so glad I did. It was so much less labor intensive and provided a more even finish. I would definitely recommend using a sprayer to paint furniture if you want a professional look.

Below are some before and after pics.

As a bonus, by not buying all new furniture I was able to spend money on some great accessories to finish the look. I bought 2 glass night stands from Rooms to Go, a glass vase, glass box, candle holder, Hotel Collection comforter set, and a grey nail head trim storage bench from TJ Max, 2 grey sequence pillows from JC Penny, 2 glass votives and artificial pink roses from Michael's, a pink duvet set, and a  zebra print rug, to pull the Hollywood glam theme together. For my light fixture I used a chandelier with a lampshade drum set to bring modern elegance to the room.

Since my husband agreed on the pink accents lol, we compromised and he was given free reign on our gallery wall as long as the photos were in black and white :). He came up with this gallery wall which I couldn’t have done better myself.

As I mentioned before I love my new bedroom, but what I love more is the money I saved by up-cycling my bedroom furniture set! 🙂
